5 Hatke Ways To Celebrate Raksha Bandhan!

We love all things funky and unique at Con Affetto! Check out our ideas on hatke ways to celebrate Raksha Bandhan 2016. Pajama parties, movie marathons, virtual coffee if your brother or sister is far away, a trip to an amusement park or bringing back a childhood ritual, which creative way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan will you pick? When we first set eyes on the picture above, it had us going ‘OMG, yes!‘ and laughing till we teared up, all at the same time, as memories of those childhood squabbles came rushing back in a flood. You may love them to bits, or love to hate them at times, but all said and done, if you have a sibling it’s hard to imagine life without them! Your siblings understand you in a way that few other people do, and nobody else has that shared and intimate knowledge of the other that comes with years of growing up together.

This year in addition to the rituals, the symbolic tying of the rakhi; the traditional goodies and mithai; the friendly banter and the demand for gifts 😉 we wanted to do something unique to bring back the memories and bring alive the fun that characterizes the relationship between siblings. Sounds interesting? Read on for some hatke ways to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with your brother or sister!

#1: Take a walk down memory lane this Raksha Bandhan

Sunday morning cartoons over breakfast; Friday night pizza dinners; weekend trips to the park or beach, every childhood is replete with certain family rituals. Bring back some of your favourite rituals this Raksha Bandhan and relive memories of your childhood with your brother or sister as you go back to being kids again in each other’s company, even if it is only for a few hours.

Pajama parties, movie marathons, virtual coffee if your brother or sister is far away, a trip to an amusement park or bringing back a childhood ritual, which creative way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan will you pick?

Take a walk down memory lane…

Con Affetto Stories: Riya, 27 & Arjun, 23 from Chandigarh, grew up in Dehradun with a shared passion for Scrabble. “As kids, Friday nights were Scrabble nights. We would rush back from school on Fridays, finish whatever we needed to and then get down to Scrabble! Even Mummy, Papa knew better than to disturb us, in fact they encouraged us. We would often eat dinner over the Scrabble board and things could get really competitive. Now, with Riya settled in Delhi, those Friday night Scrabble sessions are a thing of the past, but we make it a point to play a game every Raksha Bandhan. Whether it is Delhi or Chandigarh, we take out the time to catch up every year, even if it is just for a day, and the Scrabble board travels with us! And yes, things can get really competitive even now!

#2: Celebrate this Raksha Bandhan at an amusement park

Nothing is more symbolic of the unbridled fun and abandon of the early childhood years than a trip to an amusement park. A whole day set aside for fun and frolic; exciting rides; enticing food; laughter and shared moments with loved ones, some of our best childhood memories are often associated with picnics or trips as a family. You may be all grown up now but the amusement park can still bring out the inner fun loving child in you. And hey, its a great way to unwind, de-stress and bond with your sibling without having to worry about planning the details. Just book your tickets and you’re sorted!

Pajama parties, movie marathons, virtual coffee if your brother or sister is far away, a trip to an amusement park or bringing back a childhood ritual, which creative way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan will you pick?

Bring out the rakhis at an amusement park this year!

Con Affetto Stories: When we were kids, a trip to Essel World every year was a must in the summer holidays. Some of our best childhood memories are associated with that place” recount Tejas, 37 and Divya, 32. “Now, Divya is in the US, and I’m in Mumbai and we just get to meet once a year. But last year she made a special effort to plan a trip around Raksha Bandhan and both of us had the same idea: Essel World! We took the entire extended family along; our kids had such a blast and we really got to spend quality time together after years. It was the best Raksha Bandhan in years!

#3 Planning a last minute Raksha Bandhan and don’t know what to do? Try a movie marathon!

The daily grind can get to the best of us, so if you’re one of the many who’ve had absolutely no time or mind space to even think about what to do for Raksha Bandhan, a movie marathon may be the perfect solution! It’s a brilliant opportunity to hang out and catch up, while being able to relax and unwind all at the same time. You could head to the most conveniently located multiplex, or the neighbourhood theatre where you watched movies together as kids if that’s possible! Or, if even that seems like too much effort, just sack out at either of your homes and bring on the movies!

Pajama parties, movie marathons, virtual coffee if your brother or sister is far away, a trip to an amusement park or bringing back a childhood ritual, which creative way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan will you pick?

Have a chilled out Raksha Bandhan with your fave munchies & movies!

Con Affetto Stories: Twins Anchal and Abhimanyu, 26, love watching movies but their hectic schedules barely leave them with time to breathe! They often end up watching movies together over the weekend as it also gives them a chance to hang out and a movie marathon to celebrate Raksha Bandhan seemed like a brilliant idea! “We are not really into rituals and stuff. What is important is that you bond with each other and spend time together. This year Raksha Bandhan was in the middle of the week so it was also a day off and much needed respite from work. A movie marathon seemed brilliant! We even got popcorn and ice cream and ate from the same tub like we used to as kids :)

#4 Celebrate this Raksha Bandhan in your pajamas!

We’re talking pajama parties and sleepovers! Back when you were kids, you and your sibling probably shared a bedroom and spent long hours chatting and bickering way into the night. Bring out those jammies and bring back those all night talkathons with a good old fashioned pajama party. You could even throw in some of your favourite grub and organise a midnight feast! It will be a unique Raksha Bandhan all right and a super fun way to bond.

How about some bedtime stories, just like when you were kids?

Con Affetto Stories: We often plan sleepovers for our kids these days but we never thought of having one for ourselves until one of our kids gave us the idea!” share Preeti 27, Anjali, 32 and Rakesh, 35. “We felt a bit silly at first, but slowly we began to enjoy ourselves and had so much fun that we didn’t want the pajama party to end! We are all in the same city but every one is so involved with their own lives that we barely get a chance to meet. We have decided to celebrate Raksha Bandhan every year with pajama parties so that come what may, the three of us get to spend time with each other.

#5 Long distance Rakha Bandhan? Raise a toast…virtually!

Miss your sibling terribly come Raksha Bandhan but feel helpless because you are continents apart? Fret not, in the day of Facebook Live and SnapChat, a little social media can go a long way! This year, why not catch up with your sibling over a virtual meal? Just pick a time slot that is mutually convenient and arrange for a snack that suits the occasion! You could go one step further and pick a snack you know your sibling is particularly fond of, or maybe something you both equally relished as children!

Continents apart at Raksha Bandhan? Virtual coffee to the rescue!

Con Affetto Stories: Ridhi, 23 and Rishabh, 27 have celebrated many a Raksha Bandhan together, albeit virtually “We were really close as kids, and now with both of us settled in different countries, we really miss those growing up years when we were always together. Especially on occasions like Raksha Bandhan you really feel the pinch, but it’s difficult to plan a trip every year now with kids in the picture and everyone’s evolving schedules! Skype really came as a blessing to us. Even today, when I feel really low, my first instinct is to check if Ridhi is free for a quick Skype chat and it’s the same with her. On Raksha Bandhan we make it a point to set aside a good one hour for each other and chat about anything and everything. Last year we had this idea of having a meal together, on Skype to celebrate Raksha Bandhan! Our time zones were so out of whack that we could only manage a cup of coffee but it was so wonderful. Best coffee ever!

So there you have it, some truly hatke ways to celebrate Raksha Bandhan! Movie marathon, pajama party, trip to the amusement park…which one will you pick? Or maybe you have some ideas of your own or some unique experiences you’ve had at Raksha Bandhan with your siblings. Tell us; we’d love to hear from you this Raksha Bandhan!

Con Affetto’s ULTIMATE Baking Ingredients Checklist: Beginner

It’s a lazy Saturday afternoon and you’re in the mood to bake a gooey-licious chocolate cake. You get your favourite recipe out, prep the cake pan, measure out the flour and…you’re out of sugar! And baking powder… And there’s just, um, one egg and a scrap of cooking chocolate that’s not enough even for a cookie! Ever been there? Totally sucks, right? We know. And that’s why we’ve put together a list every home baker needs; a list that’ll ensure you have ALL your baking ingredients in place whenever you’re in the mood for some bakin’. Put this on your must-read radar along with our list of must have baking essentials every home baker needs and you’re good to bake!

The ULTIMATE baking ingredients checklist for beginners!

1. Flour

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

The basic baking workhorse!

This is your basic baking workhorse, whether you’re thinking cakes, cookies or breads. Two of the commonly used flours most home bakers come across are plain flour and self raising flour. Self raising flour is plain flour with a raising agent already added. If you’re using plain flour, you’ll need a raising agent like baking powder or bicarbonate of soda to ensure your cakes get that awesome rise you want!

Wholemeal flours tend to give a denser texture, but you can swap part of your refined flour with wholemeal for a healthier version.

Keep watching this space for some funky and healthy recipes using wholemeal flours- coming up soon!

2. Baking Powder

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Those cakes ain’t rising without this ‘magic’ baking ingredient ;)

When you have flour on the list, baking powder is bound to follow, coz that flour ain’t rising without this must-have on your baking ingredients checklist. Baking powder is a raising agent made of bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar and sometimes, cornstarch. Cream of tartar is an acid which activates the bicarbonate of soda- causing the release of carbon dioxide and helping to aerate the cake with moisture, so that the cake doesn’t get too dry.

3. Bicarbonate of Soda

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

The soda bakers can’t do without :D

Also known as baking soda, this is a base that is called for in recipes that also contain some sort of acid like buttermilk, yoghurt, lemon juice or honey, to name a few. The acid in the recipe reacts with baking soda, creating carbon dioxide and causing your cake to rise.

Just in case you were wondering- baking powder and baking soda are two very different ingredients.

Some recipes call for both baking powder and baking soda- this is usually to get the desired leavening as well as flavour and browning of your baked goodie.

 4. Butterrrrr!!

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Utterly butterly…cake-licious!

Utterly butterly required on any list of must have baking ingredients! Beaten together with sugar, butter is what gives your cakes its light, airy feel.

Important Baking Tip: Remember, butter needs to be at room temperature for baking.

We CANNOT imagine our creamed cakes without the delicious feel of butter!

5. Another all rounder on the must have baking ingredients checklist…

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Good ol’ eggs to get that fluffy sponge cake just right

…Eggs of course! Eggs are used in batters for binding as well as to trap air in the batter. As with butter, make sure the eggs are at room temperature before you get baking.

6. Cocoa/ Chocolate

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Ahhhh…chocolate!

Coz what would a chocolate cake be without this on our must have baking ingredients checklist? Okay, plain vanilla which is also kinda nice, but we admit we’re chocoholics and we must must must have our chocolate cakes! You can go with either cocoa or chocolate. Or be like us and use both 😉 for your cakes, buttercream icings and fillings.

7. Sugar

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

A pinch of sugar…

The sweetest no-brainer on our baking ingredients check-list. There are all sorts of this sweetie of course 😉 Plain old white granulated sugar- nothing quite like this baby for creaming those wet ingredients together.

We have a sugary sweet post coming your way soon: all about the various sorts of sugars you need to sweeten up your baking just right!

Caster sugar tends to be quite popular among home bakers too; it blends real nice thanks to its fine texture. Icing sugar, is what you need for icing-DUH! Then there are a variety of brown sugars- light, dark, muscovado; each with a distinctive flavour and each lending itself to a particular sort of recipe.

8. Spice

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

…and some spice…

Sugar and spice go together to bake all those baked goodies nice :) Think cinammon, ground ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cardamom. A pinch or two can add that burst of flavour that’ll elevate your cake or cookie to the next level.

9. Vanilla Extract

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

…and a hint of vanilla, bakes all things nice!

This can really add that special zing to a recipe which is why it makes it to our list of must have baking ingredients. Invest in real vanilla extract made from vanilla beans, SO much better than the cheaper vanilla essence.

Pssst! Delhi home bakers! You may want to check out THIS fab resource on where to get your baking supplies in Delhi. Includes the full scoop on where you can get some REAL vanilla too!

10. Milk

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Fresh, creamy, flavorful…the goodness of milk in our gourmet bakes

We like ours full fat for that added creaminess and flavour :)

11. Yeast

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

That bread looks yeasty good!

Yeast. Instant, active dry, rapid rise, there are some yeasty varieties out there. Pick yours depending on what your recipe calls for.

12. Salt

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Can’t imagine grub without salt? Well, bakes need a dash too…even some sweet ones!

Just a pinch. For that added dimension to your scrummy bakes.

13. Vegetable Oil

Check out this super resource for home bakers; the ultimate baking ingredients checklist for beginners

Treat her with tickets to the most happening event in town this Mother’s Day…we’re thinking art, couture… or maybe a musical or play she might enjoy.

5. The Apple Crumble & Pecan Pie Momma

And she has a goofy side to her as well…one that you know only too well, even though she keeps it well hidden from the rest of the world! Take your Apple Crumble & Pecan Pie Mumster to an evening out this Mother’s Day…an evening of fun, frolic and wild abandon, where she can let her hair down! She’s the super enthu social butterfly and her friends (and yours!) know they can rely on her. She’s fabulous company and loves having people over, is a real softie at heart (though she can go rock hard if someone’s messing with you) and is incredibly versatile. She’s everyone’s favourite, huggable Chocolate Hazelnut Cookie Mumma and you love her to (chocolate chip) bits! Con Affetto Love: Featuring Shehla Meezan

Trends Forecaster. Hunter of fashion and tech moments. Travel Photographer…”

Hooked? We don’t blame you! That’s how she describes herself on social media and she had us hooked…and lined and sinkered! Speaking of getting hooked at first sight, in this particular case it worked both ways 😉 The lady in question saw us on Instagram and was intrigued. It was the beginning of a long and beautiful association that we honour and cherish till date, with her going on to become one of our most frequent, valued and need we say- most charismatic Con Affettistas! *Con Affettista (n, female; male:Con Affettisto): Someone totally cool who crushes on Con Affetto and possibly, fell in love with us at first sight* 😉

Okay, we bet the suspense is killing you now, so we’re going to bring her centre stage right away! Introducing Shehla Meezan, all of the above and SO much more and we are so honoured and delighted to have her sharing this space with us today!

Without any further ado, in conversation with Shehla Meezan…

Featuring Shehla Meezan

Welcome to the blog Shehla! We’d love, love, LOVE to know a little more about you!

Happy to be here :) I’m a trends forecaster and amateur photographer, turned creative director to an online fashion company. Born to travel, I’ve been all over the globe and currently call New Delhi my home.

You’re a fabulous trends forecaster with a keen sense of the global fashion industry. Tell us a little about your journey?

Well, I did my schooling at Sanskriti School in Delhi, followed by undergrad at NIFT where I studied Fashion & Textiles. I then did a specialization in Creative Pattern Cutting from London College of Fashion.

What have been your biggest challenges and achievements so far? Personal and professional…

In conversation with Shehla Meezan, creative director, trends forecaster, valued Con Affetto client

A world traveller…Shehla’s going places!

My biggest achievements while growing up were to work with the best designers around the world from Delhi to London to New York. After that I have come to creating from ground up, a new age fashion portal online. Personally, my family has granted me so much independence that I have traveled around the world by myself, from a young age of 7 years. It’s a great experience when you meet new people and discover new cultures, makes me forever hungry to try out new things.

Your family sounds incredibly supportive. Can you tell us a little more about them?

My family has rarely managed to stay together; it’s either my father or me or my sister who are always on the move, my mother is the one who keeps us rooted. So when we all do get together, every once in a few months, we try and make the best of it. Our entire family is spread across the globe, so when we all come together it’s like a whole festival!

In conversation with Shehla Meezan, creative director, trends forecaster, valued Con Affetto client

Family…festivals…love…gifting!

That sounds like so much fun :) Families and festivals always remind us of gifting! What’s your take on gifting?

I like to give people what I would like to get, in terms of value. Anything new and unique makes one feel special, and that is something I aim for every time.

We agree :) Okay, one last question. You’ve been a valued Con Affetto client for some time now. So…*blush blush*…what’s your take on us?

In conversation with Shehla Meezan, creative director, trends forecaster, valued Con Affetto client

Yup, it’s love at first sight with our gorgeous, blooming arrangements alright :)

I came across the beautiful gifting style you at Con Affetto have, on Instagram. So unique and so delightful, you can outshine any bouquet of flowers or box of imported chocolates even! Your popular flavours keep you trendy. All my close ones have expressed their delight especially about this unique present and always have so many compliments for you’ll. Your special attention (customer care pre and post delivery) is always a pleasant surprise and so very welcome in today’s Indian service industry. I can’t wait for you to begin nation wide delivery, I have so many people to surprise with your unique idea of Con Affetto.

Thanks SO much Shehla, for joining us on the blog today! We wish you all the very best in all your future endeavors; in fashion, gifting, travel and all of the fantabulous things that we’re sure lie ahead for you!

Delhi’s Old Market is a haven for home bakers! Get your pick of baking supplies here

Delhi’s Old Market deserves a mention of its own with its multitude of stores where you can find what you need, and sometimes even what you thought you wouldn’t find in your wildest dreams (Yup, it’s happened to us!).  One of our most visited haunts is the quaint little lane behind Novelty Cinema with a bunch of shops lined up in a row. Now these little shops may not be much to look at, but take a closer look and it’s a market lane straight out of one of Enid Blyton’s faraway, magical lands! For here, you will find a bunch of shops that sell only bars of chocolate. Right next to another little bunch that sells only confetti. Yup, no kidding! Take a trip here and you’ll find everything from flour, cocoa, confetti, flavours, essences, chocolate bars to the latest in baking equipment. INA Market in Delhi is another treasure trove for chocolate lovers; here you will find brands like Calebaut, Selbourne, Morde as well as great quality almond meal, dry fruits, candied peel, whole spices and a variety of soft cheese. Then there is also Sadar Bazaar in Old Delhi; go here for packaging material and stuff like moulds and cupcake liners. Oh, and did we mention that these are wholesale markets so everything you buy will be at super competitive rates, making it well worth the trip here? Other worthy mentions: National Food Products at Daryagunj where you get all sorts of cheese from local to imported and SP Mukherjee Marg near Sadar Bazar with another line of shops selling cooking chocolate, flavorings et al.

We’ve listed some of our absolute faves above, but for many of the basic baking supplies in Delhi, you can also check out your friendly neighbourhood Big Bazaar, Needs or gourmet stores like Le Marche and Nature’s Basket. Fab India outlets have some hidden gems too; e.g. their organic vanilla beans which we totally dig and they stock sachets of vanilla powder too. Then there are also bakeries like Gourmet Affaire’s in GK II which, although not a baking supplies store, will be happy to help you out with a cake tin or liquid color or an edible sugar decoration. And for our dairy needs, there are the good ‘ol Mother Dairy outlets whose buttermilk we swear by!

And on to tins and pans to bung all those bakes in…

When we’ve shopped to our heart’s content for the baking staples, here is where we head to for all our bakeware:

Matchless Machine Tools

The days of begging friends and relatives flying in from abroad to cart a muffin tray or cookie punches may be over, with several stores now offering bakeware right here, but it’s always a pleasure to find a veritable treasure trove of all the baking tins and pans you could possibly need under one roof. Which is where MMT comes in with its collection of anything you might ever need to bake in! Baking tins in every conceivable size, cookie cutters, dessert rings, icing sets…you’ll find them all here.
